Cause of Death

The Grim Reaper

If the world we live in was perfect, each of us would get to die by the time we reached old age, happy, in the comfort of our loved ones. Unfortunately, many never achieve this peaceful ending of their life. There is a simple reason for it: many of us die before our time from reasons that may or may not be under our control.

But what are the leading causes of death? There are countless reasons why people die before their time, in this site, Cause of Death: Leading Causes of Death, I will try to cover the main reasons of mortality and try and come up with ways for you to avoid them.

Additionally, although many illnesses scare us to death (pardon my pun), for example, Swine flu, Bird Flu, Ebola, Anthrax, when it comes to the grand picture, they are insignificant in terms of the number of deaths they cause. Of course, that does *not* mean this can’t change at any given minute (if the Swine Flu virus turns into an epidemic it may very well become one of the leading causes of death – hopefully that will not happen!).

By creating this website, my goal is to give you effective means to improve your chances of living till old age. And for each leading cause of death, there’s more than one way, so I will try and elaborate as much as I can. Although it is (perhaps) an overly ambitious goal, I hope that by reading this site and taking what I say seriously, you may get to live longer. And that by writing it, so will I.

The six leading causes of death in the US (in order of significance) for 2006.

  1. Smoking and Tobacco usage
  2. Obesity: Poor diet & lack of physical activity
  3. Abuse of alcohol
  4. Microbial agents (infections, bacteria, virii)
  5. Toxic agents – chemical, pesticides, heavy metals,
  6. Car accidents

I will elaborate on each of these causes in a separate article, as well as suggest ways to overcome them (i.e. stop smoking, weight loss programs, quitting addictions, etc).

As you can see, some of these cause far more deaths than others, i.e. almost 9 times more people die from smoking than from car accidents.

Furthermore, many of these causes are things under our control. We can stop smoking. We can improve our diet and start exercising more. We can stop drinking (or at least drink in moderation). We can boost our immune systems. We can avoid heavy metals. If we adopt these guidelines, there is a very good chance we will extend our lifespan!

More on this on each individual article.
