Car accidents: #6 Cause of Death

When the car was first invented, unfortunately the car accident was not far behind to accompany this new mode of transportation.
There are billions of cars all over the world, and this number is growing every day. Not only this is bad for our environment, but it also results in countless accidents that may hurt both the car’s driver, another driver, or one or more innocent bystanders. Think about it: there are so many cars that they are the 6th most common cause of death! It’s a frightening thought when one thinks about it, that a vehicle meant to transport us kills and injures every day so many people.
There’s not a lot of need to elaborate on the damage car accidents can cause. They can cause injuries, both minor and major, maim and easily result in death.
Ways to minimize the risk of car accidents
- Drive carefully and obey the law: if you go over the speed limit, your risk of an accident grows. The reason traffic rules were invented was to protect both drivers and nearby people.
- Wear a seat belt: this can protect your life if you are involved in an accident (which may not even be your fault!).
- Be aware of the environment: if a strong rain begins, a snow storm start blowing, or a fog manifests, drive more carefully. Snow and icy roads are very dangerous and even the most experienced drivers may lose control of their car. This also includes places where animals or people may jump in front of you.
- Be aware of road conditions: this relates to the previous item (environment conditions) but is not identical. If you drive on a bumpy/low quality/narrow road, slow down.
- Buy a safe automobile: some vehicles are known to have many safety features and/or be sturdier. This is very likely to protect you in the event you are involved in an accident.
- Do not drink and drive: as mentioned in the alcohol section of this site, drinking alcoholic beverages can seriously impair your reaction time.
- Do not be distracted by extra activities: specifically, avoid the usage of cell phones. This not only is illegal but distracts you and may cause you to make mistakes. Similarly, avoid doing any other activities while driving that may distract you such as shaving, putting makeup, wearing a tie (all activities that can be seen often if you drive often during rush hour).
- Use a car seat for your toddler: If you have a toddler, make certain he is safely buckled in his car seat.
- Make sure your car is in good condition: this means going for standard services and going for repairs if something is wrong.
- Avoid driving when you can’t: if you are feeling you cannot drive because of various reasons (you are sick, feeling sleepy) then don’t. Pull over and find an alternate way to get to your destination. Otherwise you are putting yourself and others in danger.
- Maintain proper distance from cars ahead of you: this protects you in case they make a sharp stop as well from your own inattention.
